Resume Content
-What should you have on your resume
- Name, address, phone number, email
- Sections - what sections are going to give your potential employer the information they need to know about you
- Different jobs - different sections, example
- Experience, education, skills (Now popular), certificates, awards/industry recognition, sometimes hobbies,
- Drop off non-relevant information - old jobs
- Drop detail off your old jobs or drop them completely - Last 5 years is most relevant
- Writing Tips
- Sometimes less is more, strike out unnecessary words
- Use bullets - no paragraphs
- Primacy Effect - lead with your accomplishments!
- Three to five bullets under each position
- Hire a professional writer if you need too
- Make targeted versions of your resume if you are applying for multiple different types of jobs
Cover letters
-To cover letter or not to cover letter, what I personally do
-If you do cover letter, personalize it to the position. Keep it relevant.
-Give your elevator pitch, not your life story
Submitting Resume
- only submit one version
- Submit a PDF copy of your resume if you can
- Typing your information in is a pain, but do it.
- Follow instructions when submitting
- If you know someone inside - submit online AND get your resume to the inside person
